Abstract

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) affects a large number of adolescent girls in Indonesia. Data indicates that approximately 70 to 90 percent of women of reproductive age in Indonesia experience PMS symptoms. Female students at SMAN 10 Pekanbaru face similar issues. The school had not previously received specific education regarding PMS; community health center staff had merely distributed iron (Fe) tablets without providing comprehensive reproductive health education. The lecture-based methods previously employed failed to engage the adolescents effectively. This community service initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge of adolescent girls regarding PMS through video-based education and leaflets. The activity was conducted in four stages: preparation, implementation of education, evaluation, and reporting. Knowledge levels were assessed using pre-tests and post-tests covering six topics: the definition, causes, signs and symptoms, risk factors, impacts, and management of PMS. The results showed an average knowledge increase of 61 percent, surpassing the established target of 60 percent. The greatest improvement was observed in the topic regarding the impacts of PMS (68 percent), while the smallest improvement occurred in the topic regarding the causes of PMS (55.1 percent). Educational interventions utilizing videos and leaflets proved effective in increasing the adolescent girls' knowledge of PMS. It is recommended that the school continue to utilize these media to support adolescent reproductive health programs.
